Foundational Beliefs

Personal beliefs that underlie my work:

  • Within each person there lies a truth and wisdom that is worth eliciting. One of the primary roles of educators, parents, colleagues, friends and partners is to create the context and space so that wisdom can emerge, be made conscious, and become a source of information.
  • With awareness comes the possibility and responsibility of choice.
  • As we are more conscious and explicit in our intentions, our actions can be more frequently aligned with our values.
  • Transformation never stops.
  • This work and language is simply a more recent iteration of the underlying concepts and goals of many life philosophies and spiritual traditions. We stand on the shoulders of many giants.
  • We all have the opportunity to access and align ourselves with a higher, more generous internal self that considers the wellbeing of the greater community.
  • In our physical bodies, relationships and communities there is an innate impulse and ability to heal and grow,
  • There are many ways to address challenges, interpret situations, and solve problems.
  • Cognitive and emotional flexibility are an asset and can be developed.
  • We are co-responsible. When we connect, possibilities are endless.
  • These skills are learnable, teachable, and become more permanent with practice.
  • Community wellbeing trumps individual wellbeing, long term considerations trump short term, diversity trumps homogeneity, we are all connected.
  • Change is inevitable.
  • Conscious change requires attention and flexibility.
  • Humans are naturally motivated to contribute with enthusiasm, creativity and dedication. We have the option to create cultures and contexts in which these natural tendencies flourish.
  • Conflict and challenge are inevitable and are an opportunity for growth and learning.
  • Our brains, neurological systems and bodies are ideally suited for learning and changing. Cultures and environments can foster or hinder these natural possibilities.
  • Permanent, meaningful change -learning- takes place in the context of relationships.
  • Change is learning and learning is change.
  • Tools and environments exist that nurture self-actualization.
  • Experience enhances the possibility of durable learning.
  • Curiosity is an antidote to judgment.
  • We are all on our own journey to make a difference.
